Pedestrians | Dutch More Or Less - Exhibition by Het Nieuwe Instituut (2024)

Thanks you so much for everybody that showed up at @nieuweinstituut ‘s opening exhibition : Dutch, More Or Less.
I am beyond grateful of having my first museum commission ‘Pedestrians’ being part of this exhibition. It is a collaboration with @coodre, who crafted the sculpture and @jeilustra who made the sound design that goes with the animations - BIG THANKS to them, they killed it!
‘Pedestrians’ builds upon ongoing references in my work that exemplify culturally important symbols commonly found in Caribbean life — here, the larva known as the “Rasta Caterpillar” in Martinique.
By bringing my life in Martinique in conversation with Dutch design, I want to recontextualize my roots and the symbols of my heritage into different settings to help emerging creatives think beyond the traditional boundaries of design. As such, this installation uses a range of mediums such as 3D modelling, sculpture, and animation to integrate elements that echo more rigid Dutch contexts with visual references seen elsewhere and otherwise.
Was amazing to see how people were interacting with the installation, really grateful to see it. This piece will be displayed until November in case you missed the opening!
I want to thank of course @nieuweinstituut ‘s amazing team for all their kindness and hard work during this project and for trusting me: @shrtfilm , @ariannevanderveen , @aricchen & @christie.bakker !
